Mo Salah could yet grace the Anfield turf in a competitive fixture beyond this season. That's if recent reports are accurate.
Mo Salah will leave Liverpool at the end of the season. The club and the player have both announced that, bringing an end to nine wonderful years.
But it's a strange one. Salah's contract doesn't expire until 2027 and Liverpool are agreeing to a mutual termination here - so why?
The Saudi Pro League is supposedly very high on signing Salah and there's no question that they'd have paid a fee to get him this summer. Yet, Liverpool will give up any chance of bagging a fee and it's not entirely clear why.
One plausible explanation for that is Salah not actually wanting to go to the SPL. No other league could really afford the fee and so if he refuses to go there, and Liverpool still want his wages off the books, termination is the only answer.
And it's entirely possible that Salah doesn't want the SPL move. He may still want European football as there's little doubt that he still believes he can compete at the elite level.
The Telegraph, for instance, reports that a move to Italy and Serie A is on the cards. Salah may want to remain in the UEFA Champions League and doing so would open the door to a competitive return to Anfield in the coming seasons - just, in a different kit.
Let alone the potential for a Premier League move. No one could entirely rule that one out, either.
The Announcement
On 24 March, Salah released a video message and Instagram post confirming his departure. Although he signed a two-year extension in April 2025, he reached a mutual agreement with the club to terminate the final year of his deal. This move aims to provide transparency for fans amid constant rumours.
Strained Final Season
The 2025/26 campaign has been challenging for the 33-year-old. After being dropped for a series of games late last year, Salah publicly claimed the club had "thrown him under the bus" and hinted at a "nonexistent" relationship with manager Arne Slot. Statistically, he has struggled to match his elite standards, recording 10 goals and 9 assists in 34 appearances.
Future and Injury
Salah is currently sidelined with a muscle injury sustained during the Champions League win over Galatasaray on 18 March. He missed the Brighton defeat but is targeting a return for the FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City on 4 April. Massive tax-free offers from Saudi Pro League clubs like Al-Ittihad are reportedly already on the table for the summer.
