FC Red Bull Salzburg Women 0-1 SK Sturm Graz (H/T:0-0). Goal: Jakobsen (48')
The third of four consecutive clashes with the top four teams in the ADMIRAL Women's Bundesliga ended like the previous two. Our team challenged SK Sturm over 90 minutes, but this time, too, we fell just short, losing 0-1.
There was a somewhat sleepy start to begin with under the Liefering midday sun. Pavlovic's charges countered a missed Tragl free kick with crosses from the Spinn sisters, which, however, failed to find their targets. Theresa D'Angelo hit several efforts from distance, while Vina Crnoja showed off an ambitious free kick from the flank.
Overall, numerous injury interruptions slowed the pace in the first 45 minutes, but the teams still went into the dressing room with a top-class goal: Kustrin headed for support Michaela Fischer, and the goalkeeper excelled in one-on-one situations.
There was a twist after the restart, and change on the scoreboard at the Red Bull Football Academy. Fischer couldn't clear in time after a backpass and lost the ball to Jakobsen, who slotted it into the empty net with ease (48').
Since the Styrian team didn't return the favor, with Riesenbeck intervening in a desperate moment after a mistake from Gritzner in goal, a final offensive was called for. A Crnoja shot here, a solo effort from Greta Spinn there, and Grabovac also plucked up some courage in the final moments – but the Black and Whites' five-woman defence couldn't be outsmarted, and there were no points claimed today.
We definitely held our own and showed again that we can play on equal terms against top teams. In these close games, the small details often make the difference – Sturm took advantage of their only chance, and we missed ours. Based on what we saw, I'd still say we lost undeservedly. At the same time, we saw what we need to work on if we want to take points from the league's best teams. We're focused on our daily work and will come back stronger!
