A leading member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Real Madrid has this week booked his spot at next year’s World Cup.
The player in question? Federico Valverde.
Midfielder Valverde was for his part back in action on the international front on Thursday night.
This came by way of a World Cup qualifying meeting between Uruguay and Peru in Montevideo.
When all was said and done at Centenario Stadium, the evening’s hosts emerged dominant victors, by three goals to nil.
The aforementioned Valverde, meanwhile, saw out the full 90 minutes.
And as alluded to above, the latest three-point haul secured by Marcelo Bielsa’s troops proved an altogether significant one when it comes to Uruguay’s prospects moving forward.
As much comes with La Celeste, sitting 3rd in the CONMEBOL standings, having now officially qualified for the 2026 World Cup.
They join all of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Paraguay in locking their place in at international football’s grandest tournament.
