The transfer saga that is the future of Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz has continued to play out this evening. It was believed that Wirtz had agreed on personal terms with Bayern Munich. But something about that story always felt off. SPORT BILD reported earlier today that Florian Wirtz’s father had denied reaching an agreement with Bayern Munich for his son to join the Bundesliga champions. Now the story has taken another major twist, with Manchester City meeting with the Wirtz camp today.
A new report from Christian Falk for CF Bayern Insider has revealed that Florian Wirtz and his parents were in Manchester today. The purpose of the meeting was for Wirtz and his camp to meet with Pep Guardiola. Furthermore, Falk reports that negotiations between Manchester City and Wirtz over a potential move to the Etihad were also discussed. Falk adds that Bayer Leverkusen would prefer to sell Wirtz abroad rather than to Bayern Munich. It was further revealed by Falk that Manchester City have made an offer to Leverkusen to sign Wirtz. A verbal agreement is in place between the two clubs Falk further reports.
Lyall Thomas has also reported for Sky Sports that Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen have a verbal agreement in place over a potential deal for Wirtz. Furthermore, Thomas adds that Florian Wirtz has yet to make a decision about his future.
Jack Gaughan has also reported for the Daily Mail that Wirtz and his parents met with Manchester City officials today. Furthermore, Gaughan reports that Pep Guardiola wasn’t present at the meeting today.
Based on all of the latest information, Manchester City are pressing forward with a move for Florian Wirtz. The fact that they have verbally agreed on a transfer fee with Bayer Leverkusen is a major step. That part of the deal appears to be done. It’s now a matter of convincing Wirtz that his future lies at the Etihad. But City could hold a trump card on that front.
There is a defined role in Pep Guardiola’s squad for Florian Wirtz. With Kevin De Bruyne set to leave the club in the coming weeks, they are screaming out for a new number 10. Wirtz ticks that box. The allure of playing under Pep Guardiola is also there. Manchester City have the financial means to satisfy Wirtz’s demands and Bayer Leverkusen. Now the decision rests with Wirtz over his next move.
The race to sign Florian Wirtz is far from over. It seems that Manchester City have now made a big move to sign the German international. It now remains to be seen if Wirtz decides to move to England. That possibility appeared to be off the table late last week. But now it is clear that City remain in the race to land the biggest prize in this summer’s transfer window.
