Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon has set a new Champions League record after his fantastic performance in the 3-0 win against Benfica.
The Magpies were in sublime form on the night and could have easily ended the game with a significantly higher margin.
Gordon was at the heart of Newcastle’s emphatic win, bagging a goal and an assist and was a serious contender for the man of the match award.
The 24-year-old opened the scoring for Newcastle just after the half-hour mark, slotting home a low cross from Jacob Murphy after a sweeping team move.
He then set up substitute Harvey Barnes for his brace in the 83rd minute before stepping off the pitch to a standing ovation as he was replaced by Anthony Elanga.
Gordon’s 32nd-minute goal etched his name into the club’s folklore as the first Newcastle player to score in three consecutive Champions League games.
He scored a brace of penalties in the 4-0 win against Belgian giants Union Saint-Gilloise, as well as the 2-1 defeat against Barcelona at St. James’ Park.
Gordon has been in fantastic form in the Champions League this season, notching four goals and an assist in three fixtures.
While he has yet to open his goalscoring account in the Premier League, he remains a key player for Eddie Howe’s side and one of the first names on the team sheet.
Speaking on his performance against Benfica after the game, Gordon said (via BBC): “It means everything [to be the first Newcastle player to score in three consecutive Champions League games].
“But we need more, my ambition doesn’t stop there. Because we had so many chances, we had to put one away to calm the nerves.
“I was glad to see it go in. Playing with [Jacob] Murphy, I knew he was going to play that ball every time. That goal is all about him.”
Newcastle, who were without Sandro Tonali due to injury, had 19 shots with 10 hitting the target.
They also created five big chances and had a flurry of chances to increase the scoreline late in the game, but couldn’t get past Benfica’s Anatoliy Trubin.
The Magpies will now turn their attention to this weekend’s home clash against Fulham.
