Tottenham Hotspur showed resolve to beat Atletico Madrid at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash.
After suffering a mullering in the first leg, Spurs claimed a 3-2 win in North London, ultimately crashing out with their heads held high.
Tottenham needed players to stand up and be counted. A few of them headed the message and stepped up to the plate, particularly Archie Gray.
Paired with Pape Matar Sarr in midfield, Gray did a remarkable job controlling proceedings and even recorded an assist for his troubles.
The Tottenham star played two key passes, completed 38/43 passes (88% accuracy), and 2/3 long balls.
He completed 2/3 dribbles and recorded two progressive carries. He won only 2/7 duels but was constantly buzzing about and proved influential.
Football London’s Alasdair Gold raved about his performance, saying, “Looks so comfortable at this level, and he was leading the charge from the midfield in the first half.
“His performance was typified by his interception and assist for Xavi’s goal. One of his best performances in a Spurs shirt.
“Even Llorente came over to shake his hand before he left the pitch, for the 20-year-old was excellent.”
More importantly, the Gray–Sarr pivot is beginning to look like something Tottenham can lean on.
In the last two games, their energy, mobility, and willingness to take responsibility have given Spurs a level of midfield control that has been sorely missing all season.
Sarr’s ball-winning complements Gray’s composure in possession, while both players cover ground relentlessly. It is a pairing built on balance.
For a side that has flirted with disaster throughout an abysmal campaign, that stability can prove decisive.
They have struggled to find the right balance there throughout the season, but Sarr and Gray can prove key to their season.
If Spurs are to avoid an unthinkable slide into Premier League relegation trouble, this youthful, dynamic pivot might just be the foundation they rebuild on.
