Liverpool manager Arne Slot is confident that Alexander Isak will play again this season despite suffering a long-term injury.

The Liverpool striker recently went under the knife to correct a fractured fibula following a ‘reckless challenge’ from Micky van de Ven in the 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Slot admitted that the injury is a major setback for Liverpool, but gave the fans something to cheer for after stressing that Isak’s campaign is not over.

When asked for a timeframe for Isak’s return to action during his pre-match press conference, Slot said: “No, it’s going to be a long injury – a couple of months.

“That’s a big, big, big disappointment for him and also for us.”

The injury adds to a difficult first season at Anfield for Isak, who arrived from Newcastle United for a club-record £125 million following a drawn-out transfer saga.

His debut season has been disrupted by fitness problems and inconsistency, making this latest blow particularly frustrating for both player and club.

Isak had only started finding his feet at Liverpool. He opened his Premier League account in the 2-0 win against West Ham United and also broke the deadlock just 10 minutes after coming on against Spurs.

However, he lasted only four more minutes before being forced off with an injury.

Isak’s injury comes at a time when Liverpool lack options at the top end of the pitch with talisman Mohamed Salah representing Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Cody Gakpo is also struggling with a knock, although there’s a decent chance that his recovery could be fast-tracked ahead of this weekend’s clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Slot also played down suggestions that Isak’s injury could force Liverpool into action during the January transfer window, while bringing Harvey Elliott back from his loan at Aston Villa has also been mooted.
