Liverpool’s defeat to Chelsea was damaging enough in the table, but the sight of Ibrahima Konate limping off provided an even greater concern for Arne Slot. The Liverpool manager confirmed after the 2-1 loss at Stamford Bridge that the French defender had been substituted due to injury.
“I don’t know if it is a big injury, but what I do know is he limped a little bit and when I asked him he said he felt his quad a little bit.
“Then, for me, all alarm bells go off because in another sprint you never know if that is going to go good.
“It was also already a substitution I had in mind, maybe for a few minutes or a little bit later, because the right centre-back had a lot of ball possession and we needed to create from that position.
“We all know Ryan [Gravenberch] is quite good in that.
“It might be OK that he went off early enough but it was clear I had to take him off because he was limping.”
Liverpool entered the game without first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker, which made Konate’s early exit even more concerning. A third straight defeat in all competitions, following losses to Crystal Palace and Galatasaray, compounded the growing sense of unease.

Konate has been named in the France squad for World Cup qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Iceland, yet his involvement now appears uncertain. Given Liverpool’s lack of depth at centre-back, Slot will hope national team duty is postponed in favour of recovery.
The situation is delicate. Summer signing Giovanni Leoni is sidelined for the rest of the season with an ACL injury, leaving Joe Gomez as the only fully fit natural centre-back available. Slot has relied on tactical adaptability since taking charge, but this could be the biggest test of his resourcefulness so far.
Slot admitted Konate’s substitution had been in his mind even before the injury concern, highlighting the importance of ball progression from defence. Bringing on Ryan Gravenberch was an inventive move, yet one that showed just how dependent Liverpool are on Konate’s defensive profile.
The Frenchman is key not only for his physical strength but also for his ability to step into midfield and initiate attacks. Without him, Liverpool lose both stability and distribution. Gomez is reliable, but asking him to play consecutive high-intensity fixtures without rotation is risky.

The upcoming international window offers Liverpool a small pause, yet it also carries uncertainty. France may push to assess Konate themselves, but Slot will be eager to retain control of the situation. Rest, not risk, is the priority.
Liverpool have already weathered setbacks under their new manager. Yet title defences are rarely smooth, and resilience now becomes the key measure.
For all the tactical planning and squad evolution under Slot, some solutions can only be found in availability. Konate’s injury may prove minor, and if so, Liverpool’s season will breathe easier. If not, the reshuffle could define the weeks ahead.
