Slot outlines approach ahead of Southampton tie

Arne Slot has never been one for understatement. The Liverpool head coach treats even routine cup ties as moments to articulate philosophy. On the eve of the Carabao Cup third-round clash with Southampton, Slot confirmed that change is coming, not because of weakness or necessity, but as part of a wider strategy.

“Yeah, we do [make changes]. Same as we did last season in the League Cup,” he said. It was matter-of-fact, an acceptance of the schedule that requires both ruthlessness and pragmatism. For a club still unbeaten this season, the calculation is simple: trust the squad, keep the energy, and aim to win everything.

Managing workload, preserving energy

Slot’s explanation was rooted in the calendar. “So many games need to be played and our players are able to do so, but once in a while they need a bit of rest as well because we sometimes tend to forget because we are so focused and I’m the first one, on our games at Liverpool but many of them have played twice for the national teams as well,” he noted.

There was even a smile about the late drama of the Merseyside derby, where he admitted he would have welcomed extra seconds to chase another goal. “Now that tells you, I think, all about the mentality we have, always wanting to score a goal.”

Rotation, then, is not a luxury but a necessity. Giovanni Leoni, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Wataru Endo and others are expected to feature. “These are the players that need a game and we’re happy that we have one. If we wouldn’t have had one, we probably would have arranged a friendly,” Slot added.

Opportunity for new arrivals

Liverpool’s recruitment this summer was about depth as much as star power. Alexander Isak will be given more minutes to accelerate his integration, while summer signings like Leoni and Mamardashvili are set for their first real test at Anfield. Slot views these fixtures not as a step down but as crucial dress rehearsals, ensuring that when the season reaches its demanding peak, no player is undercooked.

“We’ve used quite a lot in the last three games because we thought we needed to keep this energy throughout all the three games, but not all of them. And the few we haven’t used, it’s definitely the perfect moment for them to get playing time,” he explained.

Trophy intentions remain clear

If there was any doubt about priorities, Slot was quick to extinguish it. “Last season we reached the final with these line-ups and there’s no trophy we underestimate, we always want to win every trophy we compete for,” he said. Liverpool’s run to the final last year, only to be undone at the final hurdle, still stings. This time, the manager is explicit about intentions: rotation without compromise.

“That’s the good thing about the quality of the squad we have, that we still have a very good team that we can play tomorrow. But we have to think about the long term as well,” he added, making clear that balance between immediate results and season-long endurance is the defining challenge.

Against Southampton, the expectation will be victory, but Slot’s words suggest something larger: a squad being carefully nurtured for battles across all fronts, a manager laying down principles for the months ahead.
