Arne Slot has revealed he spoke to Trent Alexander-Arnold individually after the Liverpool right-back’s poor performance against Manchester United.

The England international was heavily criticised after putting in one of his worst displays for the club during the 2-2 draw with their bitter rivals at Anfield.

It has been suggested that the 26-year-old has been affected by interest from Real Madrid, who last week had a transfer bid rejected by Liverpool, although Slot said during his press conference that he does not believe this is the case.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s League Cup semi-final first leg at Spurs, the Dutchman said he talked with Alexander-Arnold about where he needs to improve without going into specifics.

“I’ve spoken to him and others individually as well which you do after every game,” Slot said. “I spoke to him before the game as well and the things we shared I will not say here.

“It wasn’t his best game and I showed him where to improve. But you do this after every game. Sometimes you show them what they did really well. But I do this with everyone.

“There are always things you can improve, but in general they worked really hard. We were unable to get the best result but we still got a result.”

Slot continued: “I think we were all disappointed, not only Trent, by the way we played, first of all by the result.

“Parts of the game we could be quite satisfied with, other parts we were not completely happy with. That was not only Trent, there were more things in the game we could have done better.

“Trent did not play his best game, I’ve said that already, but it is not the first time in his life he didn’t play the best game of his career.

“He has played so many games well for this club, now it wasn’t his best – like some others it wasn’t the best game – but we just pick it up and start training again.

“These players know, if you play 50-60 games in a season, once in a while you don’t have your best performance.

“Maybe we should highlight more how good it is these players every three days can play such a good game.”
