Liverpool head coach Arne Slot admits his side were lucky in their Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain.

An underwhelming Liverpool beat PSG 1-0 thanks to a late strike from substitute Harvey Elliott to take a crucial lead back to Anfield in the second leg of their last-16 clash next week.

The French champions bossed most of the game and saw Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s goal chalked off by VAR due to a tight offside call.

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker kept Liverpool in the game with a string of fine saves and was awarded the Player of the Match Award by UEFA’s technical panel.

The Brazilian made nine saves on a night where Liverpool were battered and bruised, only for the hosts to fail to score from any of their 27 shots at goal.

Still, Elliott stepped up in the dying embers of the game to secure one of the great smash-and-grab victories in recent Champions League history.

Slot admits even a draw would have been a lucky result, saying: “Had we got a draw, we would still have been the lucky ones. They were much the better team today. In the first half, they had many chances. In the second half, they were still the better team."

"It’s a good result for us, but we felt the quality of Paris," he added. "Every underlying stat shows you they were the best side in the Champions League. I wasn’t surprised at how good they were. We were not under-par, it was just down to the quality of the opposition. They showed it today. Luis Enrique has created an incredible team here.”

Liverpool are back in action on Saturday when they host Southampton in the Premier League.
