Liverpool return to domestic action with little room for sentimentality. A trip to Manchester City looms, followed closely by a Champions League quarter-final against the holders. It is a sequence that will shape the season, and perhaps define Arne Slot’s early tenure.
Yet the backdrop is unmistakable. Mohamed Salah, a central figure in Liverpool’s modern success, is approaching the end of his time at Anfield. His expected departure has shifted the emotional temperature around the club, raising questions about focus, priorities, and the balance between tribute and ambition.
Slot has acknowledged the significance of Salah’s farewell, but his message is measured. The manager is keen to ensure that admiration does not dilute intensity.

As he explains: “There’s every right that it should be about Mo for everything that he does for this club, but we are playing for something special and I think every player needs the support of our fans in the upcoming period.
“Mo will 100 per cent sure get it – and until now I’ve always felt that all of our players have felt that support when they were playing. We need this because [we have] challenging games.”
It is a call for unity rather than distraction. Liverpool’s ambitions remain alive, and Slot understands that emotional energy must be directed towards performance, not nostalgia.
There is little doubt how Anfield will respond. Salah’s contribution to Liverpool has been vast, his goals and consistency forming the backbone of a sustained period of success. The coming weeks are likely to feature tributes, banners, and a sense of occasion that reflects his stature.
Slot, though, is attempting to frame that appreciation within the demands of elite competition. Liverpool are not navigating a gentle farewell, they are competing at the sharp end of multiple fronts. The challenge lies in ensuring that celebration does not become a distraction.
For Slot, working with Salah has only reinforced what was already widely understood. The forward’s excellence has been built on discipline as much as talent.
As he recalls: “I started working with him and already the first day I was impressed by his professionalism because as with any season, it starts with a test that shows how much they did in the off-season and he beat all of them. He was the fittest player that came back, and I think that’s the ideal situation that you want as a manager: that your star player comes back as fit as he did.
“He had nothing to prove, but for himself he had a lot to prove because Mo always thinks he has to prove something every three days. That hunger never stops and that is something that I find most special about him.”
That mentality has defined Salah’s time at Liverpool. It is also, perhaps, the standard Slot now seeks to embed across the squad as the club prepares for life beyond its most reliable figure.
Liverpool’s immediate task is clear. Honour a legend, but compete without compromise.
