As Liverpool prepare to face Crystal Palace at Anfield in the Carabao Cup, the game carries far more weight than a typical domestic cup tie. After losing five of their last six games in all competitions, Arne Slot’s side are searching for a performance to stop the slide and restore confidence. Seven points behind Arsenal in the Premier League and with Aston Villa, Real Madrid and Manchester City on the horizon, this is no time for half-measures.
David Lynch, speaking to Dave Davis for Anfield Index, summed up the growing pressure on Slot to make a statement. “To be honest, the League Cup has always been used to give minutes to players on the fringes but with the form that Liverpool are in that you can afford to do that,” he explained. It’s a clear message that rotation, normally an accepted part of this competition, could now be a dangerous risk.
Since lifting the Premier League title in his debut season, Arne Slot has been credited for his calm authority and clear tactical approach. However, his second campaign has been anything but smooth. Injuries, lapses in intensity and a loss of rhythm have exposed frailties in a squad once known for its resilience. Lynch noted: “It’s a home game and an opportunity to make things work and be better than they have been.”
That sentiment underlines what this fixture represents — not just progression in the Carabao Cup, but a test of character and leadership. “I think he should go as strong as possible for this one because they’ve got to do something about this run of form they are in,” Lynch said.
There’s no escaping the fact that Liverpool’s season could unravel quickly if this poor spell continues. Slot’s insistence on maintaining control and structure will be scrutinised, particularly by a fanbase that has grown used to high standards.

Crystal Palace arrive at Anfield with confidence and a well-organised shape under Oliver Glasner. Lynch warned of the danger they pose, adding: “It will be a well-organised Crystal Palace team that can hurt you and Liverpool need to recognise that this will be a tricky game.”
Palace’s ability to sit deep, counter-attack and exploit defensive gaps has troubled Liverpool before. It’s exactly the type of test Slot’s side have struggled with in recent weeks, especially when tempo and precision have been lacking. For Liverpool, control of the midfield and sharper attacking combinations will be key to avoiding another disappointing night.
The debate around team selection is already intense. “I think Slot will go with a stronger team than you expect,” Lynch predicted. That would seem a necessity rather than a luxury, given what’s at stake. A rotated squad might have sufficed in previous years, but the current form leaves little room for experimentation.
“If Liverpool lose again it’ll be bad. He can’t afford to go with a heavily rotated side and add another defeat to an awful run of form,” Lynch added. His assessment captures the anxiety surrounding this moment. Another defeat would deepen the crisis and dent belief in Slot’s project.
“Maybe he does rotate, but I’m not a big fan of that idea,” Lynch concluded. On this evidence, few would disagree. This Carabao Cup tie may not define Slot’s tenure, but it could determine whether Liverpool’s season still has momentum or slips further into uncertainty.
