Arrascaeta could receive Rio de Janeiro’s highest honour after sealing Flamengo’s 2-0 win over Cusco (PER) in their Libertadores opener.

According to Coluna Do Fla, acting president of the Rio de Janeiro Legislative Assembly, Alerj, Guilherme Delaroli, has proposed awarding the Medalha Tiradentes to Flamengo’s number 10. He cited a landmark spell since 2019 and the club’s national and continental triumphs.

Delaroli regards the Uruguayan as a pillar of the side and highlighted his part in the move for the equaliser against River Plate (ARG) in the 2019 Libertadores final, a defining moment in his Flamengo story. He also argued the midfielder’s performances have aided the growth of football in Rio, underlining his sporting and symbolic influence on and off the pitch.

Since joining in 2019, Arrascaeta has taken a leading role and lifted three Libertadores, three Brasileiros and 11 other trophies.

After Gabigol’s departure at the end of 2024, he inherited the club’s iconic number 10 shirt, immortalised by Zico. In the Cusco victory on Wednesday 8, he became the foreign player with the most appearances for Flamengo, reaching 370 matches, and he now has 102 goals.
