The Uruguayan was injured in the 1-1 draw with Estudiantes in Argentina on Wednesday, the third round of the Libertadores group stage. He came off in the first half after a clash with Piovi and was replaced by Carrascal.

He was taken to a hospital in La Plata where the fracture was confirmed, then returned to Rio with the squad, arriving at around 6.30am, before further scans and surgical clearance. The operation, performed late on Thursday morning by medical chief Fernando Sassaki, lasted one hour and fixed the break with a plate and screws.

Hours after the surgery, Arrascaeta and his wife Camila shared photos from hospital, the playmaker wearing a sling to immobilise his right arm. He thanked supporters for their messages on X, formerly Twitter.
