Arsenal made it two wins from two on their pre-season tour of Asia with an entertaining 3-2 victory over Newcastle at the National Stadium in Singapore.
The Gunners headed into this match after a 1-0 triumph over AC Milan last time out, and they emerged victorious once more here, but they had to do it the hard way, coming from behind and being pegged back in the second half.
Anthony Elanga, Newcastle’s new £55million man, opened the scoring on six minutes with a scruffy finish that took two deflections and went in off the post, and the Magpies had the advantage with their first real foray forward.
Mikel Merino equalised for the north Londoners with a neat finish into the corner after a nice lay-off from Kai Havertz as Mikel Arteta’s side began to piece together some nice patterns of play on the edge of the opposition box.
It was two just seconds later as Alex Murphy, the young Newcastle left-back, sliced Havertz’s low, drilled cross into his own net, and Arsenal went in at the break with a deserved lead, with their improvement throughout the half warranting their place in the driving seat.
Jacob Murphy stepped off the bench to level with a low strike that beat David Raya at his near post and had the Toon right back in it, and captain Martin Odegaard had to rally his young troops to go again.
Step forward 15-year-old Max Dowman, who dazzled off the right flank after replacing Bukayo Saka at half time. Some name to take the place of, but some performance to follow his eye-catching display against Milan last time out.
It was Dowman’s pace and directness that struck fear into substitute left-back Matt Targett, but Joelinton was his next victim late on, as the Brazilian felled the winger in full flow as he burst into the box. Odegaard converted the spot-kick to seal the victory emphatically.
Job done for Arteta, with his next task now being to integrate new signings Cristhian Mosquera and Viktor Gyokeres into that side. If he can do that seamlessly, Arsenal will be a real force to be reckoned with this term.
