Arsenal have been crowned Premier League champions for the first time in 22 years after Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw by Bournemouth on Tuesday night.
The result at the Vitality Stadium leaves Mikel Arteta’s side four points clear at the top with just one game remaining, meaning the title will return to north London for the first time since Arsène Wenger’s legendary Invincibles season in 2003/04.
The visitors arrived on the south coast needing victory to keep the race alive, but the evening was overshadowed by mounting speculation that Pep Guardiola is preparing to leave the club at the end of the season. In what is expected to be the Spaniard’s penultimate match in charge, City were second best for long periods against a fearless Bournemouth side.
The hosts took the lead shortly before half-time through teenage sensation Eli Junior Kroupi, who curled a superb finish beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma after being picked out by Adrien Truffert. Bournemouth continued to threaten after the break, with Djordje Petrovic producing an important save to deny Nico O’Reilly at the other end.
Erling Haaland rescued a late point for City with a finish that clipped the post on its way in, but it was not enough to prevent Arsenal supporters from beginning their celebrations.
The result also keeps Bournemouth’s remarkable Champions League dream alive in what was Andoni Iraola’s final home match in charge of the club.
