Arsenal head into a defining stretch of the season with momentum briefly stalled and uncertainty growing around key players. With fixtures stacking up across multiple competitions, Mikel Arteta is now balancing recovery timelines with competitive urgency.
The spotlight naturally falls on Arsenal, but more specifically on the fitness of Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, two players who have become central to both structure and identity.
Saka’s withdrawal from England duty raised eyebrows, though the context matters. He joined the squad late, with Thomas Tuchel already signalling a need to manage workloads.
For Arsenal, this may prove a blessing in disguise. There is a growing sense that Saka’s absence from international minutes was precautionary rather than reactive. Arteta is likely to take a measured approach, especially with Southampton, Sporting CP and Bournemouth all looming within days.
There remains a strong possibility Saka could be rested in the FA Cup, preserving him for fixtures that will define Arsenal’s season.

Rice’s situation feels slightly more delicate. After admitting he was “shattered” last month, his early return for “medical assessment” suggests accumulated fatigue rather than a clear injury.
The quote from Tuchel offers insight into the mental and physical strain at play.“He is just now on the edge, where he thinks, ‘Does this make sense, what I’m doing here, to push through with 70 per cent [fitness] and push myself and push myself?’ And the same with Bukayo.”
For Arsenal, Rice represents more than midfield stability. He dictates tempo, protects transitions and drives the team forward. Managing his minutes now could prove decisive in April and May.
If midfield concerns are manageable, the defence presents a more complex picture. Gabriel and William Saliba both missed international action after the Carabao Cup final.
Brazil confirmed Gabriel’s issue clearly:“Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes is out of the friendlies against France and Croatia. After the game against Manchester City, for the final of the English League Cup, the athlete complained of pain in his right knee. Imaging tests have confirmed that Gabriel is not fit to play in the matches during this international break.”

Saliba, meanwhile, is dealing with a recurring ankle issue requiring rest. Neither case appears long term, but timing is critical given Arsenal’s upcoming Champions League tie.
Beyond Rice and Saka, the list grows. Martin Odegaard edges closer to a return, which could soften the blow of Eberechi Eze’s absence. Jurrien Timber and Leandro Trossard are expected back soon, while others such as Piero Hincapie and Martin Zubimendi remain uncertain.
Arteta’s challenge is clear. Rotate too much and rhythm suffers, push too hard and injuries deepen.
What matters now is sequencing. Arsenal do not need everyone immediately, they need the right players available at the right moments. That is where careful management of Rice and Saka becomes decisive.
With the season entering its sharpest phase, availability may prove just as important as ability.
