Arsenal’s Karl Hein is slated to make his Bundesliga debut against Bayern Munich tomorrow due to an injury to Werder Bremen No. 1 Mio Backhaus. Bremen head coach Horst Steffen confirmed that Backhaus suffered a shoulder injury in training, opening the door for the newly acquired Estonian international to start between the sticks. The 23-year-old featured regularly in La Liga whilst on loan at Real Valladolid last season.

Bremen head to the Allianz Arena to take on Bayern six days after losing 0-3 to SC Freiburg at home. Since being unexpectedly thrust into a starting role this season, Backhaus has ended up conceding 10 goals. The new Germany U21 No. 1 did find himself unlucky last week, however, as a Vincenzo Grifo penalty and unfortunate own-goal from youngster Karim Coulibaly counted against his record.

In any event, Hein will certainly receive a chance to lay claim to the No. 1 slot. The nature of Backhaus’ shoulder injury might keep the 21-year-old out long term. Hein not only amassed 31 La Liga appearances last season, but also started twice for country twice during the recent September international break.

After standing in goal during the international games, he’ [Hein] is in rhythm,” Steffen remarked at a Thursday press conference. “He can prove himself. We’ll be needing a few parries [against Bayern].
