Gunners not at their best despite taking the lead against Man United as a number of key players go missing

Arsenal fell to their first home defeat of the season as Manchester United earned a chaotic 3-2 win at the Emirates Stadium.

It had been a positive start for the Gunners, who took the lead through a Lisandro Martinez own goal, but Martin Zubimendi gifted Bryan Mbeumo an equaliser and Patrick Dorgu’s stunner then put the visitors in front.

Mikel Merino bundled home late on to level things up, but Matheus Cunha’s brilliant curling strike had the final say with three minutes remaining.

Matt Verri was at the Emirates to rate the Arsenal players...

David Raya 6

Given no chance with the three United goals. Sharp off his line to mop up balls in behind and confident with distribution, even as the tension in the stadium grew.

Jurrien Timber 6

So advanced with his positioning, summed up when he was in the six-yard box challenging with Martinez for the own goal. Solid enough defensively.

William Saliba 6

Surprise to see him bursting into the box on the overlap for one first-half counter. Brilliant sliding challenged stopped an almost certain Fernandes goal.

Gabriel 5

Did not look particularly comfortable up against Mbeumo, who gave him a tough afternoon. Usually superb at marshalling the defence but could not bring composure here.

Piero Hincapie 5

Straight back into the side after injury and started well against Amad His cross led to the opener and he supported Trossard well on the overlap. That influence faded.

Martin Zubimendi 3

Howler of a back pass gifted Mbeumo the equaliser. Had earlier gone close with a flicked header but that error came at a terrible time. Hooked before the hour mark.

Mistake: Martin Zubimendi

Declan Rice 6

Could have had another set-piece assist when Zubimendi went close. Created more chances than anyone else on the pitch, even if not at his driving best.

Martin Odegaard 4

Arsenal need more from their captain. Pass accuracy of 67% was his worst in the league this season. His volley forced the own goal but increasingly anonymous as United’s foothold in the match grew.

Bukayo Saka 7

Lovely ball inside to help create the opening goal. One-man show in attack at times in the second half as Arsenal kept giving it to him and hoping for the best. Quiet after switch to left wing.

Gabriel Jesus 4

More fun to watch than Gyokeres and looks a better fit but overall his impact was fairly limited. Couple of nice flicks about the sum of his first league start in more than a year.

Leandro Trossard 6

Electric early on in skipping past Dalot and skied one effort from just inside the box. As the pressure grew, Arsenal turned to the comfort blanket of Saka and Trossard had little chance to get involved.

Substitutes:

Mikel Merino (Odegaard 57’) 7

Poacher’s instincts to force ball in for equaliser.

Ben White (Hincapie 57’) 6

Willing runner but relationship with Madueke was not quite there on the overlap.

Viktor Gyokeres (Jesus 57’) 6

Looked fairly strong holding the ball up and drawing fouls. Did not have a sniff in front of goal though.

Eberechi Eze (Zubimendi 57’) 5

Tough to remember a meaningful touch he had after coming on.

Noni Madueke (Trossard 75’) 6

So frustrating. Again. So positive, so direct, and yet so little end product.
