Arsenal ruthless against Atlético | OneFootball

Arsenal showed their strength by putting Atlético de Madrid to the sword with a 4-0 win at the Emirates Stadium.

After an entertaining and mostly even first half, it was the visitors who looked brighter in the opening stages of the second period. However, Mikel Arteta's Gunners can be clinical and they demonstrated that first taking the lead in the 57th minute from a set piece.

Declan Rice's deep delivery from a free-kick evaded the Atlético defence allowing Gabriel Martinelli to drift in and finish from close range.

Seven minutes later, Arsenal doubled their lead as Martinelli bagged his second. This one came from open play with Myles Lewis-Skelly making a surging run that meant the Atleti defence left Martinelli criminally unmarked on the left before he produced a fine finish to beat goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Viktor Gyökeres hadn't scored in any of his last nine matches for club and country going into this but he soon found himself back among the goals.

It was hardly the prettiest goal the Swede will ever score when Eberechi Eze's blocked shot fell kindly to him with the striker scuffing the ball into the net via a deflection off David Hancko.

Three minutes later, Gyökeres made it 4-0. Again, Diego Simeone's side couldn't deal with a Rice delivery – this time a corner from the left. Defender Gabriel got to the end of it and headed it across the face of goal where Gyökeres was able to convert from a yard out.

Atlético had fallen apart, conceding four goals in the space of 13 minutes, with the La Liga side unable to handle Arsenal in open play or on set pieces.

That result means it's now three wins in three for Arsenal in the Champions League so far with eight goals scored and zero conceded.
