Arsenal are now reportedly in talks with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) for Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz.

This unexpected development comes amidst conflicting reports surrounding the potential arrival of Real Sociedad‘s Mikel Merino.

According to journalist Duncan Castles and others, Arsenal, under the direct instruction of manager Mikel Arteta, have initiated contact with PSG regarding Fabian Ruiz. The Spanish international, who has struggled to secure a regular starting spot under Luis Enrique at PSG, is seen as a viable option to strengthen Arsenal‘s midfield.

PSG, eager to raise funds for their own transfer targets, including Joao Neves, are reportedly open to selling the 28-year-old midfielder, who is valued at around €35m.

This shift in focus towards Fabian Ruiz follows reports suggesting that Mikel Merino‘s preference leans towards remaining in Spain, potentially joining either Barcelona or Atletico Madrid, despite other reports earlier this week saying he was close to joining Arsenal due to Barcelona’s financial issues and Atletico’s reluctance to meet the €25m fee being asked.

Merino also reportedly retweeted Fabrizio Romano confirming Arsenal’s deal for Riccardo Calafiori, only for it to be swiftly deleted, adding more confusion to things.

The Gunners are reportedly considering a loan deal for Fabian Ruiz as an alternative option to Merino, with an obligation to buy as a possible structure for the transfer.

Fabian Ruiz, a key player in Spain’s triumphant Euro 2024 campaign, would bring a wealth of experience and technical ability to Arsenal‘s midfield. His versatility and passing range would complement the existing midfield options and provide Arteta with additional tactical flexibility.

While Arsenal‘s interest in Mikel Merino remains alive, the potential signing of Fabian Ruiz presents an intriguing alternative. The Gunners’ ambition to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season is evident, and the acquisition of either midfielder would represent a significant move for the club.
