Arsenal host Southampton in the Premier League this weekend with the Gunners aiming to continue an unbeaten start to the campaign.

Mikel Arteta’s team sent a statement with a 2-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in midweek, as goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka earned a Champions League win over the French champions.

The North London side are third in the Premier League table, just a point behind leaders Liverpool after a last-gasp win over Leicester City last time out.

Arsenal face newly-promoted opposition again in Southampton this weekend and the Saints have endured a tough start with just a point from six games played. Arteta’s men will need to find a route past former favourite Aaron Ramsdale after the goalkeeper left the Emirates to sign for Southampton in the summer.

Arsenal have issues at full-back ahead of the game with an injury crisis emerging in the backline. Jurrien Timber could miss the clash with a muscular issue, while Ben White (groin) and Takehiro Tomiyasu (knee) are doubtful. Arteta, however, said the latter duo are ‘close’ to returns. Oleksandr Zinchenko (calf) and Kieran Tierney (hamstring) are confirmed absentees for the Gunners.

The North Londoners were handed a boost in midweek as Mikel Merino made his debut. The Spain international had not featured since his arrival from Real Sociedad after fracturing a shoulder in training. Arteta could opt to hand the 28-year-old his first start.

Martin Odegaard remains out with Arteta unsure on when the club captain will return. The Norwegian has been missing with an ankle problem since September’s international break.

At is pre-match press conference, Arteta said: “Martin, it is very difficult. He is working so hard and pushing so it is difficult to give a timeline.”
