Big decision late on goes in Arsenal’s favour
The Premier League have issued a statement explaining why Callum Wilson’s goal was not allowed to stand against Arsenal.
Deep into stoppage-time at the London Stadium, the Hammers substitute looked to have rescued a point for the hosts as his effort crossed the line despite Declan Rice’s best attempts.
However, an agonising wait followed before the goal could be confirmed.
Arsenal appealed that David Raya had been fouled and referee Chris Kavanagh was advised by VAR to check the incident via the pitchside monitor and he ruled that the goal should not stand.
The Premier League’s Match Centre have now confirmed that the goal was disallowed because Raya had been fouled by West Ham striker Pablo Felipe before Wilson found the back of the net.
A statement reads: “After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of goal to West Ham United.”
Meanwhile, Kavanagh’s announcement was: “After review, West Ham number 19 commits a foul on the goalkeeper.
“Final decision is direct free kick.”

After surviving that scare, Arsenal held on for three crucial points to move five clear of Manchester City, who had closed the gap after beating Brentford 3-0 on Saturday evening.
Leandro Trossard scored the all-important goal seven minutes from time to put the Gunners within two more wins of being crowned Premier League champions.
West Ham, meanwhile, needed a win to climb out of the relegation zone, they will instead find themselves four points adrift of Tottenham if they beat Leeds - now mathematically safe from relegation - on Monday night.
