Assunção beats Rio and Niterói to host the 2031 Pan-American Games

This Friday, Brazil faced disappointment in its desire to host another major event. The cities of Rio de Janeiro and Niterói were unsuccessful in their joint bid to host the Pan American Games and the Parapan American Games in 2031. Asunción, the capital of Paraguay, was chosen.

“OFFICIAL! Asunción will host the XXI Pan American Games in 2031. Paraguay makes history by hosting the continent’s premier sporting event for the first time. The project includes the Pan American Village, an Athletics Stadium, and a new arena in the Olympic Park. Congratulations to all!” highlighted the statement from Panam Sports, the organization responsible for the Games.

The election took place in Santiago, Chile, at a Panam Sports assembly with the participation of all 41 National Olympic Committees of the Americas.

Brazil was attempting for the third time in history to host the Pan American Games. The country has already hosted the event in 1963, in São Paulo, and in 2007, in Rio de Janeiro.
