Manchester City midfielder Mateo Kovacic is attracting attention from several Premier League clubs, including West Ham and Aston Villa, as well as a host of European sides, according to Caught Offside. The Croatian international has fallen down the pecking order under Pep Guardiola and is not currently in talks to extend his contract at the Etihad.

Kovacic’s time at Manchester City appears to be entering its final chapter. Having joined from Chelsea, his initial impact was encouraging, bringing balance and composure to a midfield undergoing transition. But opportunities have become scarce.
“There are no talks ongoing over a new contract for Kovacic at City,” one source told Caught Offside. “The likelihood is that City will be receptive to offers in January. Milan in particular are looking at this opportunity to accelerate a move.”
At 31, Kovacic remains a technically accomplished midfielder, but City’s evolving structure and Guardiola’s preference for younger, more dynamic options have left him surplus to requirements. It now appears likely that the club will entertain offers during the winter window.

Both West Ham and Aston Villa are monitoring developments closely. Each side sees value in a player of Kovacic’s experience and versatility, especially given their ambitions to consolidate European football next season. “West Ham and Aston Villa are also interested, but less advanced for now,” the report states.
Villa’s pursuit of experienced players has paid dividends under Unai Emery, while West Ham’s interest aligns with their efforts to refresh their midfield options. However, Italian giants AC Milan are currently viewed as frontrunners, with Kovacic reportedly keen on a reunion with compatriot Luka Modric.
The January window could provide the opportunity for Kovacic to revive his career elsewhere, with City expected to be open to offers from England and abroad.
For Aston Villa supporters, this report will likely be met with a mix of intrigue and caution. Kovacic is a player of proven pedigree, a Champions League winner who reads the game superbly and dictates tempo with ease. Yet, at 31, there will be questions about whether he fits Emery’s long-term vision.
Fans may argue that Villa already possess depth in midfield with players like Boubacar Kamara and Youri Tielemans offering a blend of dynamism and control. Kovacic would undoubtedly bring experience, but some may fear his arrival could slow the progress of younger talents within the squad.
Financially, the move would also raise eyebrows. Kovacic’s wages at City are substantial, and Villa’s recent transfer strategy has been focused on younger players who retain resale value. However, for a team pushing towards consistent European qualification, adding a seasoned international with elite-level experience could help bridge the gap to the very top tier.
