Millwall missed out on a place in the play-off final with a 2-0 loss to Hull City on Monday night.
The Lions finished third in the Championship table, just one point behind Ipswich Town in second.
But a 2-0 defeat at the Den in the second leg of their clash against the Tigers saw their hopes of a place in the Premier League dashed.
Goals from Mohamed Belloumi and Joe Gelhardt sealed an away victory for Sergej Jakirovic’s side after they were held 0-0 at the MKM Stadium in the first leg.
The London outfit will now turn their attention to the summer transfer window, as they look to go one step further next year and earn a place in the top flight.
Millwall haven’t competed in the first division since 1990, and this was their first time in the play-offs at this level since 2002.

The future of Femi Azeez is set to become the subject of major speculation following Millwall’s defeat to Hull on Monday night.
The winger has been a standout talent in Alex Neil’s side, contributing 11 goals and seven assists from 35 appearances in the league.
Ex-Millwall player Bryan King believes that it could take up to £30 million to convince the Lions to cash in on the 24-year-old this summer.
He has suggested that Aston Villa should be in the mix to sign the forward, claiming that a record fee will be needed to win his signature following his impressive campaign.
“He’s a player who’s had a very good season,” said King, via Aston Villa News.
“If he leaves Millwall, it will be for a record sum, that is for sure.
“I wouldn’t let him go for anything less than £25 million.
“I would expect plenty of clubs to come in for him and even bid £30 million, and that wouldn’t be a silly figure.
“He’s a talented player, and he’s the sort of player that Aston Villa need.
“He’s got a trick, and after his performances this season, he’s certainly put himself in the frame for a move.
“Signing for Villa would be a great move for him and would be a great payday for Millwall.”
Azeez made the switch to Millwall in the 2024 summer transfer window, signing from Reading, and he had a slow start to life at the Den.
The winger contributed two goals and five assists in his first year at the club, with Neil’s side finishing just outside the play-offs.
But his improved performance played a crucial role in the team reaching third in the table, missing out on automatic promotion by just one point.
Azeez has a contract with Millwall until June 2028, with several clubs being linked with a move for him in the January transfer window earlier this year.
Crystal Palace were believed to be leading the race to his signature, but they may now face stiff competition this summer if they look to reignite their interest.
The summer window officially opens until 15 June in what could be a leading saga in the Championship this year.
Millwall had a good chance of being able to keep Azeez this summer had they been able to secure promotion.
But the defeat to Hull has left them in the second tier, and now the winger’s future is going to be the subject of speculation in the coming weeks and months.
A move to the Premier League could be on the cards, as he has shown that he is more than capable of competing at that level.
Millwall have a strong negotiating position due to the length of time left on his contract, so perhaps a fee between £25 or 30 million could be on the cards.
