  • Unai Emery’s side has reportedly entered the fray for James Trafford, as the 23-year-old looks for a permanent move away from the Etihad Stadium to secure regular first-team football.
  • With Emiliano Martínez expected to be on his way out of the club, Aston Villa are reportedly succession-planning and viewing Trafford as a long-term solution.
  • Newcastle United remain a strong contender, though the Magpies are currently wary of a wage structure that fits their financial sustainability model.

The representatives of Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford have reportedly held initial talks with transfer bosses at Aston Villa ahead of the summer market.

The interest from the West Midlands comes during a period of transition for Trafford, who had only returned to Manchester City from Burnley in July 2025 for a reported £19 million.

While the 23-year-old has made key appearances in domestic cup competitions this season – most notably in a 2-0 win against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup Final and a penalty save against Liverpool in the FA Cup – he has remained the understudy to Gianluigi Donnarumma.

James Trafford admits Manchester City return “has obviously been very up and down”

With City’s title race against Arsenal taking a significant blow through Monday’s dramatic 3-3 draw at Everton, the club is simultaneously managing the long-term futures of its stars who are targeting improvements in the number of on-field opportunities they are granted.

Aston Villa’s pursuit suggests Unai Emery is looking to further bolster his squad depth as the club balances domestic ambitions with their recent European success, having defeated Nottingham Forest to reach the Europa League final.

The club is expected to be aggressive in the summer to support a potential Champions League campaign next term and James Trafford is likely to be seen as the perfect profile of a modern, ball-playing goalkeeper who fits a high-line and deep build-up play.

Aston Villa make steps toward James Trafford

Now, according to insider SullyTalkz on X, Aston Villa have held initial talks with the representatives Manchester City’s James Trafford in recent weeks as the summer transfer window approaches.

Serie A giants enter race to sign Manchester City’s James Trafford

Elsewhere, it is pointed out that wages have been a stumbling block for Newcastle United as of now, but interest remains in the North-East, whilst Tottenham are also said to be ‘looking at the situation’ of the 23-year-old – who is expected to leave the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Where next for James Trafford?

While Manchester City would ideally like to keep their homegrown talent, James Trafford’s status as an England international – having earned his first senior cap earlier this season – means he is unlikely to accept another season spent predominantly on the bench.

With a market valuation believed to be in excess of £40 million, Manchester City are in a strong position to demand a significant fee that could help fund Pep Guardiola’s own summer recruitment plans, which include a search for a new midfielder to replace Bernardo Silva.

Trafford is expected to be on the bench for Manchester City’s remaining Premier League matches this season, but his focus will no doubt be fixated on the FA Cup Final against Chelsea at Wembley Stadium, with an eye on his second piece of major silverware at the Etihad.
