AS Monaco face a familiar foe in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday – a man who has been a thorn in their side time and time again.
During his tenure at Paris Saint-Germain, Unai Emery always seemed to put together the ideal tactical plan when facing Les Monégasques, which his players usually executed to perfection.
The Spanish coach has won his previous six games against the Principality club across all competitions, all during his tenure at PSG.
Many of those games weren’t merely victories for Emery’s side, but straight-up beatdowns, with PSG winning those six contests by a combined margin of 23-4.
Emery’s last match against them took place in April 2018, when they crushed Monaco 7-1 in a top-flight affair, with six different PSG players finding the back of the net.
Only once in his eight contests versus Monaco has Emery been defeated, with his former team suffering a 3-1 defeat in 2016.
Tuesday will be the third time Emery and Adi Hütter face each other, with their previous two meetings taking place when the former was in charge at Arsenal and the latter with Eintracht Frankfurt. In September 2019, Emery’s side won 3-0, with Hütter getting the better of him in North London over two months later (2-1).
A victory on Tuesday would extend Emery’s winning run against Monaco and also mark the first time Aston Villa claim an away victory versus French opposition in Europe.
Villa are fifth in the League phase table with 13 points, while Les Monégasques are three points below them in 16th.
