Aston Villa have faced an eventful few months. They are currently balancing their ambition on the pitch with plans for the future. As the Birmingham club works to strengthen their squad, as we reported earlier that Aston Villa want to sign Yanis Benchaouch, they are also keeping their focus on key players.

John McGinn, their tireless captain and emotional leader, stands at the centre of it. His performances have driven Villa’s rise under Unai Emery. Yet his future once again sparks questions. Pete O’Rourke reported via Football Insider that Villa want to secure McGinn’s long-term future with a better deal.

Aston Villa look to tie down their captain, John McGinn, amidst interest from Celtic

The timing feels right, especially after a summer full of rumours about his possible move. The 31-year-old’s contract runs until 2027, but Celtic’s interest could create emotions that football cannot measure. Seven years ago, McGinn almost joined the Glasgow club before Villa stepped in and signed him. Now, Celtic’s renewed push brings back a story that never truly ended.

McGinn still feels the pull of home and the weight of what could have been, but Villa continue to believe in him. The club also plans to approach Galatasaray in the winter window for Wilfried Singo. This shows how they are mixing ambition with stability. Villa’s leaders want to keep McGinn because they know his loyalty strengthens their progress.

While speaking on the Inside Track podcast, the transfer expert said, “I will be surprised if it was to happen anytime soon. It could happen in the future, there’s no doubt about that. There are strong links between John McGinn and Celtic.

“I think his granddad was Celtic chairman at one point as well. Got to remember, he came very close to moving to Celtic before he joined Villa in 2018. The deal to Celtic was almost done before it stalled, and Villa obviously swooped in, and the rest is history.

“There’s a deep connection between John McGinn and Celtic, but I don’t think John McGinn will be considering a move back up to Scotland any time soon. You can never rule out a move in the future. I’m sure it’s a move that might pull on his heartstrings in the future.”

Why Villa Must Keep Their Captain?

Aston Villa must keep John McGinn. McGinn’s rise from the Championship to the Champions League mirrors the club’s journey. His leadership trait, energy on the field, and bond with supporters stretch far beyond tactics. The Scotsman’s influence shows in every run, every pass, and every word that lifts teammates in tough moments.

Reports say he will soon sign a new deal, and that decision makes sense for the Lions. McGinn has been displaying his skill and heart in equal measure. He keeps delivering on the pitch and strengthens the team’s spirit.

The 31-year-old’s presence gives Villa the rhythm and unity that money cannot buy. Emery has always praised McGinn’s spirit and said that others follow his lead. If Villa extend his contract, it keeps that heartbeat strong and helps build the base for more success. In simple words, Villa need their captain as much as he needs them.
