Atalanta defender Hien out of 2026 World Cup with serious injury | OneFootball

Isak Hien’s 2026 World Cup is over after the Atalanta defender sustained a serious left hamstring injury. The Swedish Football Association confirmed he will not recover before the end of the tournament.

The centre-back started all three group matches, featuring in the 5-1 win over Tunisia, the 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands and the 1-1 draw with Japan. Against Japan he lasted only 37 minutes before limping off.

Initial tests indicated the severity of the problem, so he will miss the Round of 32 and has now left Sweden’s camp.

Hien described the tournament as a dream realised but prematurely ended, offering thanks to supporters, team-mates and everyone around the national team. He also expressed gratitude to family and close friends and said he will be back.

He is expected to undergo specialist assessment to determine the full extent of the injury and whether surgery is required.
