Athletic face 2027 contract calls as Terzic assesses squad | OneFootball

Athletic face a cluster of 2027 contract decisions, with new head coach Edin Terzic set to shape who stays and who goes.

According to as.com, deals for Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta, Mikel Vesga, Álex Berenguer, Urko Izeta, Peio Canales, Unai Vencedor and Julen Agirrezabala all expire in June 2027. Canales returns from Racing and Vencedor from Levante, and the club holds a two-year option on Canales, while Agirrezabala’s last renewal included a unilateral two-year extension to June 2029.

The sporting hierarchy, led by director of football Mikel González and director general Jon Berasategi, is working closely with Terzic. The German coach likes a positional number six.

Vesga has said he would not be an obstacle, and Vencedor was not in Ernesto Valverde’s plans. Possible departures for either are being weighed, but only after Terzic rules on their fit, and neither player has yet received an update. Segunda clubs such as Sporting are waiting.

In goal, one of Agirrezabala or Álex Padilla could be cashed in on, depending on offers. The futures of Ruiz de Galarreta, 32, and Berenguer, 30, will hinge on performances next season.

Up front, Izeta, short of minutes under Valverde, has parked interest from Segunda clubs, including Real Oviedo. He will wait for Terzic’s arrival in early July to try to earn a place.
