Atlético 5-2 Real Madrid/Xabi Alonso: “We couldn't compete”
Xabi Alonso's Real Madrid suffered their first defeat of the season against Atlético, and the Madrid coach did not shy away from accepting responsibility.
This marks Real Madrid's first loss of the season in La Liga. And what a loss it was! A resounding 5-2 defeat to city rivals Atlético. After the final whistle, Xabi Alonso acknowledged his team's lackluster performance:
It was a poor match. We struggled to play out from the back, both with and without the ball. We need to draw lessons from this for the future. It was a deserved defeat in the derby.
The Spanish manager emphasized the importance of learning from this setback:
This is a wound that could become a positive thing for us, but we weren't good enough. We lost too many balls. That's football—defeat comes at some point. We won't forget this.
As for Jude Bellingham, who was virtually invisible during the match, Alonso admitted:
Jude was training well, we wanted to use him in a certain position but it wasn't possible. Without him, we also lost a lot of possession.
