Atlético de Madrid seized firm control of their Champions League last-16 tie after a chaotic 5-2 victory over Tottenham at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The contest was effectively decided inside the opening 22 minutes as Diego Simeone’s side punished a series of defensive mistakes to race into a four-goal lead.

The breakthrough came after just six minutes when Spurs goalkeeper Antonín Kinsky slipped while trying to play out from the back, allowing Julián Álvarez to square for Marcos Llorente to finish calmly. Tottenham’s problems quickly worsened when Micky van de Ven lost his footing, giving Antoine Griezmann the chance to double the lead.

Kinsky then endured another costly error, gifting possession to Álvarez inside the box, and the Argentine made no mistake to put Atlético three ahead.

Spurs boss Igor Tudor reacted by replacing Kinsky with Guglielmo Vicario after just 17 minutes, but the hosts soon struck again as Robin Le Normand headed home after Vicario had saved Griezmann’s free-kick.

Tottenham briefly responded before the break when Pedro Porro finished neatly after good work from Richarlison to make it 4-1.

Any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished after the interval. Griezmann released Álvarez on the counter and the forward finished confidently to extend Atlético’s lead to five.

Spurs did add a second late on after Jan Oblak misplaced a pass under pressure, allowing Pedro Porro to set up Dominic Solanke, who rifled into the top corner.

Despite that consolation, Atlético will travel to North London for the second leg holding a commanding three-goal advantage.
