A taut Champions League semi-final first leg in Madrid finished 1-1, Viktor Gyökeres blasting in a 44' penalty before Julian Alvarez equalised from the spot on 56'. Antoine Griezmann grew into the game and steered Atlético's attacks.
L'Équipe notes that Gyökeres, Declan Rice and David Raya were Arsenal's standouts, with Griezmann and Alvarez leading Atlético. It was his 19th goal of the season for Arsenal, and his 27th successful penalty in a row.
Giuliano Simeone surged inside the first minute. Raya denied Alvarez on 14'. Gyökeres teed up Martin Ødegaard for a chance that went begging, and Rice led the press that preceded David Hancko's shove on Gyökeres for the penalty, hammered past Jan Oblak.
Atlético levelled on 56' when Ben White handled a Marcos Llorente effort, Alvarez converting as Raya held his ground. Griezmann struck the angle on 63'. Alvarez threatened again with an inswinging corner and a free-kick on 64'.
Raya saved superbly from Ademola Lookman at close range, and White was troubled when Lookman nipped ahead on 74'.
Ødegaard made way for Eze on 58', the substitute almost drawing a penalty before VAR cancelled it, and G. Jesus replaced Gyökeres on 69'. Giuliano Simeone was withdrawn at half-time for Le Normand, and Hancko almost conceded another penalty on 78'. Rice took the armband after Ødegaard's exit.
