Atletico Madrid have learned their punishment for their ‘supporters’ racist and discriminatory behaviour at Arsenal in October.
The Gunners claimed a dominating 4-0 victory over Atletico in the Champions League at the Emirates Stadium.
However, the match was marred by the behaviour of some ‘fans’ who made monkey gestures and noises.
UEFA have now hit the La Liga club with two fines and a one-match suspended ban for their fans.
A statement from UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) says they have fined Atletico €30,000 (£26,256) and banned them from selling tickets for the next away match.
This ban is suspended for a probationary period of one year. The club has also been fined €10,000 (£8,752) for the throwing of objects.
Racism in football remains a massive issue, and it is alarming that cases are not dropping despite punishments by UEFA.
Vinicius Junior has repeatedly been targeted with racist abuse since joining Real Madrid in 2018.
The forward got so weighed down by the ongoing issue that he broke down in tears ahead of Brazil’s friendly with Spain in March last year.
Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal was also targeted with xenophobic and racist abuse during a La Liga game against Madrid in October.
In January this year, Takefusa Kubo and Ander Barrenetxea were subjected to racism during Real Sociedad’s league match against Valencia.
In February, officials stopped the match between Espanyol and Athletic Club after Inaki Williams reported that some racists were abusing teammate Maroan Sannadi.
