Atletico Madrid are weighing a big-money approach for Newcastle United’s Nick Woltemade as they reshape their attack this summer. Bild claims they are ready to revive last year’s interest, with his future at Newcastle increasingly uncertain.

Diego Simeone’s side expect to recruit at least one forward, and depending on sales it could be two or three. Julian Alvarez continues to attract attention from Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, while there are also chances for Alexander Sorloth to leave the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

Sorloth has been important since arriving from Villarreal two years ago, but club bosses are prepared to part with the Norway international. If he goes, a replacement of similar profile would be preferred.

Atleti showed interest in Woltemade last summer when he was still a Stuttgart player. His first season at Newcastle has been difficult. After a bright start, he has rarely been used as a striker in recent months, often featuring in midfield, and he is unhappy, which makes an exit a real possibility.

Newcastle spent upwards of €75m to sign Woltemade last summer, and would likely command a similar fee now. That complicates Atleti’s plans, although a €30-35m sale of Sorloth could bridge the gap alongside existing funds.

If they can keep Alvarez, a Woltemade partnership in Simeone’s 4-4-2 could excite supporters. For now, it remains to be seen whether a move is pursued in the summer.
