Atletico Madrid and Villarreal clash at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano in La Liga on Saturday night.
Atletico are desperately seeking their first win of the season, after a tough start under Diego Simeone. Villarreal, in contrast, aim to continue their impressive early form in what promises to be an intriguing encounter.
Diego Simeone’s side faces a potential injury concern with Thiago Almada suffering from muscle overload issues that forced his withdrawal from the Argentina squad this month. The 24-year-old midfielder will be assessed by the club’s medical staff upon his return to Madrid to determine his availability for the Villarreal clash.
Fellow midfielder Alex Baena remains sidelined after undergoing appendicitis surgery earlier this month.
Marcelino Garcia Toral’s squad has been hit by significant defensive injuries. Logan Costa has been ruled out for 6-8 months after suffering a complete ACL rupture in pre-season, while Willy Kambwala faces 3-4 months on the sidelines due to a hamstring muscle tear.
Gerard Moreno remains unavailable until late September with a hamstring injury, but Ayoze Perez is nearing a return from his own hamstring problem and could feature. New signings Manor Solomon, Georges Mikautadze, and Tani Oluwaseyi are all available after completing their late transfer moves.
Los Colchoneros have endured a nightmare start to the 2025-26 campaign, collecting just two points from their opening three matches. Simeone’s men suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Espanyol on the opening day before drawing 1-1 at home to newly-promoted Elche and managing another 1-1 draw away at Alaves. The manager has admitted there is “no justification” for their poor start and acknowledged tactical mistakes in their opening fixtures.
The Yellow Submarine have made an excellent start to the season, sitting third in La Liga with seven points from their first three matches. Marcelino’s side has impressed with their defensive solidity, conceding just one goal while scoring eight.
Atletico Madrid: Oblak; Llorente, Le Normand, Lenglet, Hancko; Simeone, Cardoso, Barrios, Ruggeri; Sørloth, Álvarez.
Villarreal: Luiz Júnior; Mouriño, Foyth, Marín, Cardona; Buchanan, Comesaña, Gueye, Moleiro; Mikautadze, Eyong.
