Atlético Nacional lifted the Colombian Cup for the eighth time. Their Medellin derby triumph was overshadowed by a mass pitch invasion at the final whistle overnight from Wednesday to Thursday.

Atlético’s 1-0 first-leg advantage held after a 0-0 return leg, sealing a fourth cup in five years. According to local press reports, a group of Independiente Medellin supporters first toppled security barriers and confronted rival fans and police, with other groups from both clubs then pouring on to the pitch.

Players and staff from both sides took refuge in the dressing rooms until tensions eased.

It is not the first such incident in Colombia. Title celebrations were interrupted by a pitch invasion last year.

The medals and trophy were eventually presented on the pitch in a completely empty stadium.
