Atlético have not lifted the Copa del Rey for 13 years, their last triumph came on 17 May 2013. They hold 10 titles in the competition and will contest their 20th final in 2026 against Real Sociedad.

The first crown arrived in 1959-60, 3-1 against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu. A year later, 1960-61, they again beat Real Madrid, 3-2. Further wins followed in 1964-65 over Zaragoza, 1-0, in 1972 against Valencia, 2-1, and in 1976 over Zaragoza, 1-0.

In 1984-85 they defeated Athletic, 2-1, before overcoming Mallorca 1-0 after extra time in 1990-91. They then beat Real Madrid 2-0 in 1991-92, and Barcelona 1-0 in the double season of 1995-96. The tenth triumph came in 2013.

Atlético have also lost nine finals. The first came in 1920-21, 4-1 to Athletic, then 1925-26, 3-2 to Barcelona, and 1955-56, 2-1 to Athletic. Zaragoza edged the 1963-63 showpiece 2-1, Real Madrid won 2-0 in 1974-75, and Real Sociedad prevailed on penalties in 1986-87 after 2-2 in normal time.

Valencia won 3-0 in 1998-99, Espanyol 2-1 in 1999-2000, and Sevilla 2-0 in 2009-10.

In 2026 Atlético face Real Sociedad under Matarazzo. Since his arrival the sides have met twice, a 1-1 draw at Anoeta then a 3-2 Atlético win at the Metropolitano, with Oyarzabal and Soler scoring for Real Sociedad and a Nico brace plus Sorloth for Atlético. There will be no draw this time, the winner will be crowned Copa champions.
