Surprised at the start of added time by Olivier Giroud, the Rouge et Blanc lost at the Stade Pierre Mauroy against the Dogues by the smallest of margins (1-0).
They lacked success in the final third and were caught out in the final moments in Lille. Generally more enterprising in the first half, our Rouge et Blanc were stunned at the start of added time by Olivier Giroud at the Stade Pierre Mauroy (1-0). Recap. ✍️
After having started ideally with a win against Le Havre (3-1), AS Monaco’s players want to continue their success in Lille, a fellow contender for the podium. It was a clash that would therefore need to be approached with the utmost seriousness to come away with a victory from this first away game of the season, as had been the case in four of the last five seasons (1-0 in Metz in 2020, 2-1 in Strasbourg in 2022, 4-2 in Clermont in 2023, 2-0 in Lyon in 2024).
LOSC is one of the best teams at home, second I think after PSG. We lost twice there, it was deserved. Now we want to do much better. We're facing a top team. Many players have left the club, but they signed Olivier Giroud, a top star and a fantastic player.
To the start this second match of the Ligue 1 season, Adi Hütter banked on continuity and fielded the same XI as last week, with one exception: Folarin Balogun led the line. As to the rest of the team, Eric Dier and Christian Mawissa would be in central defence, flanked by Caio Henrique and Jordan Teze. Lamine Camara and Denis Zakaria were in midfield, behind the trio of Akliouche – Minamino – Golovin, while Lukáš Hradecký made his first appearance away from home.
In front of nearly 800 Monegasques in the away end, AS Monaco started the best and created the match’s first chances but their response was too slow, as Maghnes Akliouche was denied by Berke Özer (9′), before a header by Folarin Balogun was off-target (14′). After that, the match became lively and both teams were close to opening the scoring.
First there was an effort by the Rouge et Blanc‘ number 11, but the Turkish goalkeeper saved well with his feet (17’), then by Hakon Haraldsson for Lille, who missed the target in front of Lukáš Hradecký (21′). The highly active “Magic” Maghnes then created another opportunity with a curling shot that flirted with the top corner of the Dogues’ net (39′), in what would be the last of the first half, which ended with the score at 0-0.
Chances for both sides
The second half started off at a slow pace, and it wasn’t until the hour mark that the first chance was seen. It came from Lille, courtesy of Ayyoub Bouaddi, whose powerful shot, deflected by Christian Mawissa, went just over (61′). Nathan Ngoy’s header from a corner went wide (68′), as did Olivier Giroud’s left-footed volley (73′).
After this chance, Adi Hütter made a triple substitution, bringing on Vanderson, Eliesse Ben Seghir, and Mika Biereth (74′). The Brazilian full-back made an early run forward but was denied by Özer, despite a risky move off the line (77′). The home side looked to finish the better, and the Icelandic midfielder saw his shot go wide of the post (90′).
Unfortunately, Olivier Giroud had more luck, opening the scoring early in added time (91′). The Rouge et Blanc tried to equalize but conceded a penalty missed by Les Bleus’ top scorer (99′). The Danish striker then had the last chance but shot over (100′). Their next match will take place at the Stade Louis-II against Strasbourg, next Sunday (5:15 p.m.), in an attempt to return to winning ways before the break.
