Manchester United are closing in on Atalanta midfielder Ederson, but he is not regarded as their primary midfield signing.
According to The Daily Mail, Ederson is committed to becoming the first signing of the Michael Carrick era.
It is understood that negotiations are ongoing over a £38.8 million deal with Atalanta. United had a delegation in Italy last week to conduct discussions.
The Daily Mail claims Manchester United’s ideal midfield targets have been either Aurelien Tchouameni from Real Madrid or Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.
Manchester City, however, are leading the race for Anderson. There may still be an opening for United, as City value the England international at £90 million and Forest are demanding £125m.
It is believed Tchouameni, who is regarded as United’s “dream” midfield option to replace Casemiro, wants to stay at Real Madrid.
However, he “may yet see himself pushed towards the exit” if incoming head coach Jose Mourinho gets Rodri from City or Morten Hjulmand from Sporting Lisbon.
Tchouameni has been linked with a move away after being involved in a training ground dispute, which turned physical, with Real captain Federico Valverde.
According to journalist Paddy Keogh, a fee in the region of €70-80 million has been mentioned for the dynamic French midfielder, whose contract in the Spanish capital is valid until the summer of 2028.

It is added that “there is hope” at United that a deal can happen, however unlikely it seems. INEOS intend to offer the 26-year-old a leading role in an ambitious project.
It must be noted that Real Madrid are set to hold an election on June 7. As such, they would not engage in any formal talks over the future of one of their high-profile players.
Tchouameni is also going to be involved with France in the World Cup, meaning United may have to wait until the end of July for any concrete development.
Accordingly, it makes sense why INEOS are trying to secure the services of the likes of Ederson this early in the summer.
