The tension had built throughout this round 20 Campeonato Brasileiro meeting. The flashpoint followed a duel between Bahia’s Zé Guilherme and Corinthians’ Kaio César.

The pair had been at odds from the opening minutes, with the Bahia defender firm into challenges. Soon after, Alejo Véliz collided with a Corinthians forward and went to ground, claiming he had been struck by the opponent’s arm.

That incident sparked a broader melee involving players and members of both coaching teams. Team-mates stepped in to cool tempers.

The referee then spoke with representatives from each side and sent the teams to the dressing rooms. The first half ended 1-1.
