The 2025 Ballon d’Or awards have now unveiled their full list of nominations for a wide array of honours to be handed out later this year. But how are Manchester City positioned among the nominations?
Following a disappointing 2024/25 campaign, in which Pep Guardiola’s side battled to secure a top-four finish rather than compete for major silverware, it comes as little surprise that Manchester City’s presence in this year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony has been significantly reduced.
For a club that dominated award shortlists and regularly saw multiple players and staff recognised over several consecutive years, the latest nominations represent a sharp decline, and perhaps a reflection of City’s transition period.
This time last year, Rodri was nominated as he went on to become the winner of the 2024 Ballon d’Or following a stellar season in which he led Manchester City to Premier League glory for a record-breaking fourth consecutive season, and excelled on the international stage with Spain in their triumphant campaign at the European Championships.
But the landscape in 2025 is notably different. Injuries, key player absences, and tactical recalibrations have meant individual brilliance has not shone quite as brightly at the Etihad Stadium over the past 12 months – at least not to the same degree as in recent history.
Manchester City’s recruitment of several new faces this year – including Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri, and Tijjani Reijnders – signals a fresh project in motion, but it may take time before those players develop into the kind of Ballon d’Or contenders the club had previously grown used to producing.
Now, recognising the world’s best Under-21 players, it has been confirmed that Manchester City have no nominees among the list up for the 2025 Kopa Trophy, while no goalkeepers from the Etihad Stadium have been nominated for the 2025 Yachine Trophy – a recognition of the world’s best goalkeeper.
Additionally, Pep Guardiola has missed out on the list of nominations for the 2025 Men’s Coach of the Year award, while Manchester City as a club have not been selected for a nomination for the 2025 Men’s Club of the Year.
Looking towards the main prize and the 2025 Men’s Ballon d’Or, Manchester City have also found out which member of their first-team squad have a chance at succeeding Rodri as the new winner of the globally-recognised trophy.
For the first time since 2017, when Kevin De Bruyne was nominated and finished 14th in the final rankings, Manchester City received just one nomination for the main prize at this year’s ceremony: Erling Haaland – his fifth nomination.

While Haaland’s nomination is unsurprising given his consistency in front of goal, the lack of broader representation from Manchester City is a reminder of the high standards now expected of the club.
The Norwegian forward scored 34 goals in all competitions for Manchester City across the 2024/25 season, despite dealing with multiple fitness setbacks and a rotating supporting cast around him. His ability to maintain elite output has once again placed him among the game’s best, though whether he can go one better than last year’s fifth-place finish remains to be seen.
Looking ahead, Manchester City will now be focused on rebuilding their dominance and returning to the top of European and domestic football. Youngsters such as Oscar Bobb, Claudio Echeverri, and Rico Lewis will hope to grow into potential Kopa Trophy contenders in the near future, while many names remain the strongest bets for major personal honours in 2026.
