Barcelona have a major decision to make on Spanish forward Ferran Torres’ future should he ask to leave the club this summer.

Ligue 1 champions PSG are interested in signing the 26-year-old and reuniting him with Luis Enrique, but Barça are so far not too keen to sell.

Ferran was asked about his future, and the Spaniard did not help ease nerves among the fans, leaving the door open to a potential exit.

Now, according to Catalunya Radio, Barcelona and Ferran Torres have entered a delicate waiting game over the forward’s future, with neither side willing to make the first move before he returns to first-team duty.

There has been no direct contact so far between sporting director Deco and Ferran’s representatives over either a renewal or a possible exit.

Both sides protecting their position

If Deco approaches Ferran’s camp first and pushes for a renewal, the player’s representatives could interpret that as proof Barcelona are desperate to keep him.

That would strengthen their hand when discussing salary, contract length and other conditions.

The same applies in reverse. If Ferran’s agent initiates talks about extending his deal or begins presenting offers from other clubs, Barça could view that as a sign the player is more eager to secure his future than the club are to resolve it immediately.

For now, both sides want to retain their leverage.

Ferran’s return could prove pivotal

Both parties are waiting to see what happens once Ferran returns from his post-World Cup break and rejoins Hansi Flick’s squad.

That moment will provide greater clarity over his role, the competition in attack and whether he still intends to continue in the project under Flick.

Barcelona have publicly maintained that Ferran is not for sale and still plan to offer him a renewal.

However, his contract expires in 2027, meaning the club cannot allow the situation to drift indefinitely without accepting the risk of losing him for nothing.

Barcelona must approach this situation very carefully

There is nothing wrong with protecting a negotiating position, especially when both sides have valid reasons to wait.

However, Barcelona must also recognise Ferran’s sporting value. He will be entering the new season with the confidence of scoring Spain’s only goal, and the winning goal, in the World Cup final.

He understands Flick’s system, can play anywhere across the frontline and suits Barça’s plan of building a fluid front-three going forward.

Right now, it does feel like Ferran is closer to leaving the club than staying. However, things in the transfer market can change in an instant.

Once Ferran comes back, Flick could look to convince him with an important role in the upcoming season, and it remains to be seen what the future holds for the World Cup winner.
