Barcelona have taken an important step behind the scenes by appointing a new financial director as the club prepare for some of the biggest economic decisions of Joan Laporta’s presidency.
According to AS, Sergio Serrano, an executive from Banco Sabadell, will join Barcelona to lead the club’s financial restructuring efforts.
Serrano is best known for his role in the restructuring of the former Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo, a savings bank, and arrives with a reputation for handling complex financial operations.
The club have spent recent years focused on stabilising their finances and reducing operational losses.
Now, the next challenge seems to be managing the debt and securing the funding necessary to complete major infrastructure projects such as Espai Barca.

The report states that one of Serrano’s main responsibilities will be overseeing the financial aspects of Espai Barca and the redevelopment of Spotify Camp Nou.
Barcelona’s overall debt remains around €2 billion, while the financing required for the stadium project continues to place significant demands on the club’s resources.
Serrano is expected to work under general director Manel del Rio and incoming economic vice-president Ferran Olive as Barcelona navigate this next phase.
Perhaps the most immediate challenge will involve securing additional funding for the stadium works.
According to the report, Barcelona may soon call an Extraordinary Assembly meeting to request approval from members for additional financing linked to the completion of Espai Barca.

The €1.45 billion financial package previously assembled by Goldman Sachs from multiple investors has already been exhausted.
Civil and infrastructure works hardly ever finish within the estimated budget, and when a project is as big as renovating Camp Nou, this comes as no surprise.
This appointment highlights where many of the club’s biggest battles now lie. Serrano’s arrival may not generate the excitement of a new signing, but his role could have a major influence on the club.
While transfer news is what will dominate headlines, it is appointments like these that will set the club up to make such marquee signings in the future.
