The January transfer window was a clear indicator that Barcelona are prioritising renewal of key players more than signing new players in the market.

In recent months, the Catalans have already secured the renewal of various star players including the likes of Ronald Araujo, Gavi and Pedri among others.

Next on Barcelona’s anvil could be the renewal of Lamine Yamal, the young attacking phenom who is being widely regarded as the next big thing to come out of La Masia academy.

Jorge Mendes to meet club officials in Lisbon

A recent report from Mundo Deportivo has offered a comprehensive update on Yamal’s renewal saga, notably revealing that his agent Jorge Mendes had met President Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco in January, when Barcelona were playing SL Benfica.

The report adds that Mendes has the same plan when Barcelona travel to Lisbon once again to face their Round of 16 opponents SL Benfica, in the first week of March.

The two clubs will meet again to advance the negotiations regarding Yamal’s new contract. Mendes already shares a close relationship with Laporta and is unlikely to cause any barriers for Barça.

As a matter of fact, Mendes has already sent a strong message to the market: Yamal is not for sale.

Yamal wants to continue

The report further adds that Yamal, for his part, is keen on renewing his contract at Barcelona and has no desire to leave the club.

Providing everything goes to plan, Yamal will sign a new five-year contract until 2030, once he turns of age in July.

This new contract will see the youngster cement his future in Catalonia while the club are set to offer him a sizable increase in salary.

Both parties are hopeful of reaching an agreement within the coming few months. The meeting in Lisbon, to that end, could prove to be crucial.
