Barcelona have confirmed that Lamine Yamal will miss the remainder of the campaign but are optimistic the winger will return for the World Cup.

Yamal suffered a hamstring injury after scoring from the penalty spot during Barcelona's 1-0 win over Celta Vigo on Wednesday. In a bizarre situation, the teenager converted from the spot before immediately signalling to the bench that he had sustained an issue.

The Spanish side have now confirmed the extent of the problem, with Yamal set to be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.

It's a major blow to theLa Liga leaders, who are nine points ahead of Real Madrid in the title race, with six games to go. Yamal has scored 16 goals and created 11 assists in La Liga this season.

Barcelona have released a statement to confirm the news but eased fears over Yamal's participation for Spain at this summer'sWorld Cup.

Aclub statement said: "Tests this Thursday have confirmed that first-team player Lamine Yamal has suffered a hamstring injury in his left leg.

"The player will follow a conservative treatment plan. He will miss the remainder of the league season but is expected to be available for the World Cup."
