FC Barcelona are already working on preparations for next season. While the team continues to pursue a potential La Liga and UEFA Champions League double, sporting director Deco is planning the squad for the upcoming campaign.

Although the club is broadly satisfied with the squad under Hansi Flick, there remains room for improvement, particularly in the centre-back and centre-forward positions.

Another key issue under consideration is the left-wing role. Marcus Rashford’s loan agreement with Manchester United includes a €30 million purchase option, and Barça have not yet made a final decision regarding his future.

Meanwhile, the Catalan club are exploring young and promising alternatives in the market, such as Andreas Schjelderup and Victor Munoz.

Jan Virgili an option

Now, according to SPORT, Barcelona are also considering the possibility of bringing back former La Masia winger Jan Virgili.

Barcelona sold him to RCD Mallorca last summer for approximately €4 million, where the forward is enjoying an impressive season.

As per the report, the Blaugrana retain 40 per cent of any future transfer and a right of first refusal. His release clause is around €30 million, meaning the reigning La Liga champions could re-sign him for approximately €12 million.

From the offices at Spotify Camp Nou, there is a highly positive assessment of Virgili’s development at Mallorca, where he has played 25 matches, contributing six assists.

But Barcelona have doubts

However, as per the report, Virgili has not generated full agreement within Barcelona’s sporting department. Indeed, the Blaugrana have some doubts about bringing back the 19-year-old winger, who spent one year at La Masia.

Virgili’s inconsistency during matches, which is considered entirely normal for a player of his age, has raised concerns among the technical staff.

The youngster’s performance at the Spotify Camp Nou in early February 2026 illustrates this point. He began the match in outstanding fashion, causing significant difficulty for Jules Kounde, but gradually faded as the game progressed.

There are also some doubts regarding his defensive contribution – a factor that is especially relevant for a player expected to replace Raphinha.

While Marcus Rashford is not particularly noted for this aspect either, he offers significant value in aerial play, which is important for Hansi Flick.

All these considerations, combined with certain differences that emerged last summer prior to his transfer to Mallorca, mean that Barcelona have doubts about bringing Virgili back to the club.
