Barcelona have a host of central defensive options in the squad in the form of Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Gerard Martin, Andreas Christensen and Ronald Araujo.

Even Jules Kounde is being considered as a player who can potentially play in this position in the upcoming season, leaving Hansi Flick with decisions to make.

One player who does not seem to be a preferred choice for the German manager in that position is captain Ronald Araujo.

However, according to Santi Ovalle on Cadena SER, the Uruguayan defender’s priority is to remain at Barcelona.

There is an understanding within the club, though, that the situation could evolve if Flick makes it clear that regular playing time will be difficult to come by this season.

Araujo’s first choice is Barça

Araujo is not actively seeking a move away from the club.

Instead, the 27-year-old wants to continue at Barcelona and fight for his place in Flick’s squad, despite increased competition in central defence.

That reflects Araujo’s long-standing commitment to the club, where he has established himself as one of the team’s leaders when fit.

His form in recent seasons may have left a lot to be desired, but that is more down to his confidence than a lack of ability.

However, having fallen steadily down the pecking order under Flick, the Uruguayan defender faces an uphill battle to change his status.

If the German tactician were to tell Araujo that he is unlikely to receive significant minutes this season, he might have to leave to make the best use of the prime years of his career.

Barcelona face an important decision

Barcelona and Flick do not seem keen on forcing out anyone, especially the club captain.

However, should they wish to reinforce central defence between now and the end of the summer transfer window, that could require a sale or two.

Araujo is one of those players the club can sell and not worry about, as long as they find an able replacement like Cristian Romero in the market.
